The benefit the news provides is that you can track storms, such as we do in Florida when hurricanes are approaching, and secure your property or buy necessary supplies before hunkering down or deciding to get out of town. And our local news here in Florida also provides plenty of survival tips so that you can be safe and secure was best as possible during a storm or if you choose to leave.
What you don't want to do is become a burden on the system and civil authorities that may be late in getting to your area or have only limited supplies and resources. We have had many examples in
Florida
of people putting an unnecessary strain on the system, but one of the best examples is what happened during hurricane Wilma that crossed the state from west to east back in October of 2005.
The
Central Florida
weather people are like rabid dogs when it comes to storms and they love to report on bad weather. But they also offered tips to the people of Central and
South Florida
to be prepared with at least 3 basic supplies, extra food, water and gasoline. During Wilma's approach this message must have been repeated a few hundred times as it seemed like every time update coordinates of the storm's progress came in we were told to stock up on food and water and fill the gas tanks in our vehicles.
Even though this is the standard message, we were prepared long before the storm made its way near us. However, despite repeated warnings, many people failed to take the basic actions needed to make sure they didn't put an undue stress on the system. After the storm came through the
Miami
and Ft Lauderdale areas of
Florida
, guess what the first things people were lined up for within hour of Wilma passing. You got it, food, gas and water. In fact, there were even fights at gas stations because many people had lined up with gas cans at stations as they were afraid to drive their cars there for fear they might run out of gas.
What? Are you kidding me? Yes, even though the message to prepare was repeated over and over, people failed to follow basic survival tips to make sure they were prepared and instead expected there would be plenty of whatever it was they needed from the government or somewhere else after the big storm hit. We have become so dependent on government to rescue us and being able to buy food and other supplies at our local Walmart or grocery store at a moments notice, we don't even think to prepare for our own long term needs.
Beyond the message of good health through natural food here at ezHealthyDiet.com we are also trying to get out the message of self sufficiency as well. That's why we have our small (hope to expand that soon) vegetable gardening section and also talk about what you may want to put in your disaster survival pack as well.
Don't be dependent, be independent and be prepared.
