Healthy Diet News #008 -- You Are Responsible For Your Health August 14, 2007 |
You Are Responsible For Your Health Hi, Jean and I have learned a hard, but simple lesson in the last couple of months. It is a hard lesson because it has affected both of our families and it is a simple lesson because it is easy to do something about. The lesson is this, if you want to live a healthy life, you are responsible for your health! Please read that again, you, and only YOU are responsible for your health. We've both learned this lesson from seeing our mothers spend time in rehab centers and in the hospital while observing that modern medicine does not have all the answers. Of course, many of you probably already know that and we did somewhat as well. But when you see it in action and it has an impact on the ones you love, it really hits home. I used to think a hospital was a good place for a sick person. I no longer think that. A hospital is a place for doctors to fill patients full of drugs, poke then with sharp objects, charge them vast sums of money (which is mostly paid for by insurance companies or the government (you and I)), run various tests to protect themselves and largely participate in the status quo. When you see a hospital feeding a person who is on 14 different medications, 4 of them specifically being for heart related issues, sausage, bacon, eggs, pork with gravy and other high fat culinary delights, you have to wonder if you are seeing a movie on the Sci-Fi channel. This whole scenario seems to be quite other worldly. What kind of a hospital employing some of the most highly educated people in the world, would feed someone with high cholesterol, high blood pressure and atrial fibrillation, bacon, sausage and pork with gravy? The answer is probably 90% of the hospitals in this country! Why? Because they don't have a clue! Just have a look at 50% of the people that work in a hospital and you can see that nutrition is not a serious concern. Couple that with the fact that when you ask doctors about alternative avenues of treatment because the steady diet of pills and tests aren't providing the answers, they just look at you with a blank stare. If this is the way we treat our patients in a hospital, no wonder we spend $1.5 trillion per year on medical costs in this nation. Is this the system you want to end up in? This kind of so-called medical treatment is exactly what we mean when we say, "the status quo", and it's exactly the reason you need to be, and already really are, the person who is responsible for your health. Now it's time to take charge! One of the goals in taking care of your own health is to not have to end up in a hospital, ever. The much larger goal however, is to be able to live a long and healthy life free from the diseases that plague the western world such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity related ailments. What we mean when we say "you are responsible for your health" is that you must decide to do everything you can to live and eat as healthy as possible. Are you eating "the most nutrient dense foods possible"? This should become your mantra when thinking about what you will eat for the day. Our bodies are incredible machines made by the creator. They are much more complicated and advanced than any machine man has ever made. If you were to have the good fortune to be able to purchase a $100,000 sports car, what kind of care would you give it? What kind of gas and oil would you put in it? Who would you let work on it? Wouldn't you give it only the best of care? Doesn't your body which is vastly more complex, and much more valuable, deserve exactly the same treatment? The only way we will ever turn the tide of the status quo, or what we call the SAD (Standard American Diet) and get the medical community on board, is to start taking care of ourselves through our diet. Then when you go in for your checkup at 50 or 55 or 60 and the doctor can't find anything wrong with you, you can tell him or her it's because you eat a healthy, nutritionally dense, mostly raw diet. If you don't do this, who else will? You can make a good start on a healthy, mostly raw diet by visiting the Healthy Recipes section of our website for some great, mostly raw dishes and treats. We've also just put up a page of a couple of our colorful red & purple smoothies, with no food coloring added! As always we want to thank you for subscribing to Healthy Diet News. Until next time...
