Will You Choose Medication Or Nutrition?

I'm sure you've noticed if you watch much TV that about every third commercial is advertising some kind of prescription drug. Whether it's for some kind of male love pill or something to lower your cholesterol, we are simply inundated by pills and potions.

One in particular that caught our attention was an advertisement for a cholesterol lowering medicine where a lady is working in a large kitchen preparing what appears to be peas in a puffed pastry along with other fixins. She proceeds to tell viewers how she is, "Doing her part" referring, I assume, to the puffed pastry she's removing from the oven. The message from this commercial and from the pharmaceutical company behind it is that no matter what you do nutritionally, it's not going to be enough so, you need to take our pill. This of course, is pure propaganda.

These commercials have changed the way we view our doctors. Some now walk into their doctors office already convinced and sold on a prescription medication they just learned about from the TV. If you listen to list of side effects most of these medicines could cause, that should be enough for most people to not want to take them. Yet 40% of the population of the US is on some kind of a prescription drug.

This is an interesting juxtaposition to the anti-drug campaigns in our nation's schools. On the one hand we're telling children not to take drugs because they are bad for them, yet we are pushing drugs on people for every condition that ails them and medicating ourselves to death in some cases. Are we sending mixed messages here?

More than 100,000 people die every year from adverse effects of prescription drugs. That's more than twice as many people that die from automobile accidents and even over the counter drugs aren't all that safe. Acetaminophen or Tylenol is now the number one cause of liver failure in the United States. Just do a Google search on "cause of liver failure" and see what you come up with.

On a recent podcast we called this Medication Madness.

But There Is A Solution

Since drugs typically eliminate the symptoms of a disease and not the cause, doesn't it make sense to go after the cause. Our bodies are wonderful healing machines and if we feed them correctly, they can take care of much of our disease.

The China Study is a landmark book by Dr T Colin Campbell that conclusively shows the link between diet and disease and tells you what the healthiest people in the world are eating. Jean and I both read this book two years ago and gave 10 away as Christmas gifts the year before last because we believe Dr Campbell's book is one of the most important books you will ever read.

Also, in Dr Joel Fuhrman's book Eat To Live he takes on a major disease, namely diabetes and says, "The nutritional advice received from the American Diabetes Association (ADA), dieticians and physicians is inadequate and permits countless of unnecessary premature deaths and much needless suffering. I declare, "Don't live with your diabetes and don't simply control your diabetes...get rid of it."

The evidence is simply overwhelming that what you eat has everything to do with how healthy you will be. For some nutritious recipes to get you on the right track, please visit the healthy recipe section of our web site.
